January 30, 20131.) Mater Dei (21-1, 7-0)
A two-point home win against JSerra and a difficult road loss to Ohio's St. Edward have the Monarchs looking suddenly vulnerable with a tough stretch of games ahead. Losing on Saturday to Westchester as the host of the Nike Extravaganza would certainly deal a blow to the Mater Dei hoops prestige.
2.) Bishop Montgomery (23-0, 5-0)
After the Monarchs fell last week, the Knights find themselves alone in the Southern Section Top 10 as far as undefeated teams go. If Mater Dei stumbles again, Bishop Montgomery could find itself at the top of these rankings next week.
3.) Long Beach Poly (20-2, 9-0)
The Jackrabbits are in for a test when they take on No. 6 St. John Bosco on Saturday at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei high school. It'll be Poly's fantastic forwards against Bosco's great guards. Which set of positions will win out?
4.) Centennial (23-1, 7-0)
The Huskies don't have a perfect record in the Big VIII League sewn up just yet, as their next three opponents are the second, third and fourth best teams inside the league.
5.) Etiwanda (19-1, 7-0)
Saturday's game against No. 9 Loyola at Mater Dei high school promises to be part of a great weekend action in Southern California hoops.
6.) St. John Bosco (17-4, 7-1)
Big, big game for the Braves today, who travel to take on No. 1 Mater Dei. A win over the suddenly vulnerable Monarchs could stake St. John Bosco to a tie in the Trinity League when all is said and done.
7.) Brentwood (20-2, 7-1)
Junior point guard Tra Holder continues to impress, and his 24 points per game average the top of the scoring leaders in Southern California.
8.) Pacific Hills (17-4, 7-2)
Tough week for the Bruins, who fell to a pair of fellow Alpha League schools in Windward and Brentwood. In both losses, Pacific Hills had a disastrous quarter. Head coach Ivan Barahona has to do a better job of stopping the bleeding for this team to remain in the rankings.
9.) Loyola (16-5, 6-2)
The Cubs nearly vaulted up the rankings by taking down St. John Bosco on Saturday. The Cubs' fourth-quarter rally fell short, however, so they remain near the bottom of the Top 10.
10.) Santa Monica (17-5, 6-0)
A tough-to-swallow three-point loss to Compton notwithstanding, Santa Monica held onto its Top 10 position following a gutsy win over Inglewood on Monday.
Just Missed: Mission Viejo, JSerra, Orange Lutheran, Price
