West Coast Prep Championship:
Future College Prep 69, Westwind (AZ) 66

By Dave Rogahn

Future College Prep won its 51st game of the season, edging Westwind (AZ), 69-66, in the championship game of the 2013 West Coast Prep Championships Sunday at Cathedral HS in LA. Matthew Taylor scored 15 points and earned M.V.P. honors for FCP, which took control of the game with a 23-5 run in the second half.

Neither team led by more than five points until Future took a 28-19 lead towards the end of the first half.

Taylor scored on a putback to make it a 7-point game, and then passed to Jonas Santana for a score to build the 9-point lead.

But Westwind rallied to cut the deficit to two points late in the first half and trailed by two, 34-32, at the break.

Westwind tied the score in the opening second of the second half on a steal & lay-up by Southern Utah-bound John Marshall, and took a 39-38 lead on a 3-pointer by Glenn Baral.

Westwind pushed its lead to 44-40 after another Baral 3-pointer, building what would be its largest lead of the game.

Then came Future's 23-5 run, with FCP taking a 46-45 lead on a 3-pointer by Joel Anderson with just over 12 minutes left.

Donnavan Hastings threw down a pair of slam dunks to make it 51-45, and Taylor pushed the lead to double digits at 59-48 on a steal & lay-up with 7:52 left.

Hastings finished the run with a putback basket that made it 63-49 with 5:45 remaining.

Westwind rallied after that, and almost overcame that 14-point deficit in the game's final minute.

Westwind got within five points at 63-58 after a lay-up by Marshall, but FCP pushed its lead back to nine points at 69-60 after a driving lay-up by Taylor with 1:58 left and appeared to be in control of things again.

Westwind put together one final rally that fell just a couple of feet short. Baral hit a 3-point field goal to make it 69-63, and then deflected a pass for a steal that led to a 3-point play by Zylan Cheatham with 35.4 seconds left to make it 69-66.

And Westwind got the ball back twice more with a chance to tie or at least get closer. But Marshall's attempted lay-up with about 20 seconds left was blocked by Frank Bartley.

And Cheatham's last-second 3-point shot from just across half court fell a couple of feet short of the basket.

Taylor finished with 15 points plus 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal. Hastings had 14 points on 7-for-9 from the floor and added 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Bartley had 9 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and a key blocked shot to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

For Westwind, Cheatham had 21 points as well as a game-high 14 rebounds plus 4 assists, and was named to the all-tournament team.

Baral also had 21 points, which included 4 3-pointers, and added 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Marshall had 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
