Cameron going Pioneer-ing

Something happening when you least expect it generally has a negative connotation, be it fire, flood or zombie attack. But for Aaron Cameron, well, he's liking, make that loving, what recently took place.

A Sacramento High graduate, Cameron was all set to attend Cosumnes River College for the 2013-14 school year. The plan was to spend a year there and then explore offers.

Little did he know that a Bay Area coaching change would eventually have a huge personal impact.

That background: In April, Will Biggs retired after 16 years at Cal State East Bay. The head coach opening was filled by Gus Argenal, an assistant at Rice University who played at De La Salle High and UC Davis and previously assisted at Davis, Chico State, Texas San Antonio and Arizona State.

On the hunt for talent, Argenal developed a liking for what Cameron displayed.

The relationship became a mutual admiration society.

A scholarship offer was extended, accepted and now the 6-foot-2 backcourter will be a Pioneer.

So why the change of 100 miles?

"I took a visit and really loved the school and I like the plan that the coaches have for the program" Cameron explained. "I get a quality education so my family and I are very excited to be part of the Cal State East Bay Pioneer family."

He's being looked at as a combo guard -- "as a shooter with the ability to run a team."

Asked what he would tell Pioneer fans who want to know what is Hayward bound, the 2013 co-MVP of the Metro Conference said, "A lot of things. Great character and a competitive, winning attitude on the court and in the classroom. Leadership, both verbal and by example."

Cameron has yet to decide on his major but it's between psychology, photography, and sports management.
